It’s no secret that i’m a massive fan of the Call of Duty franchise and the traditional combat that’s been a staple of the series. I loved that they kept it simple. Gimme an assualt rifle a knife, a few flash bang grenades and i’m happy so when i first started hearing about the new Advanced Warfare installment you can imagine my disappointment that it would be set in 2054 and the soldiers would be equipped with cybernetic skeletons that could make them jump higher, go invisible etc. My immediate reaction was that they ran out of ideas and jumped on the mechanically enhanced soldier bandwagon. Well i’ve just completed the single player campaign and coudn’t have been more wrong. The new technology isn’t at all overwhelming and it’s actually added a layer that is fresh and well executed. The same goes for the multiplayer maps where the ability to jump higher has allowed for greater vertical variety and a quicker pace. I have an Xbox 360 copy of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare to give away so if you’re interested keep reading.
The low-down: The Atlas Corporation, a private military corporation, has emerged with the power to rescue humanity after a global attack on its military and infrastructure. Empowering soldiers with new, cutting-edge exoskeleton abilities and an advanced arsenal with new weaponry, vehicles and high-tech gear, you join the ranks of a highly-trained, specialized unit committed to restoring order.
Kick ass and take names basically.
That’s a screengrab from one of the most memorable moments in the single player campaign. You have to make your way across a four lane freeway in Lagos, Nigeria. Cars screaming past while bad guys are shooting at you from the other side.
Here’s a taste.
Kevin Spacey…ya he’s the main oke.
Right let’s get into it.
Presentation: Graphics are top class and you won’t get more realistic facial animation. Been a staple of the franchise, but really stands out. The amount of detail is staggering. The single player campaign has some epic levels with the combat moving from the crowded streets of Lagos, Nigeria to the bleached white tourist area in Santori, Greece to an exploding San Fransico bridge. These locations are set in broad daylight and were outstandingly presented.
Gameplay: much the same as previous games in the franchise with you and several squad members making your way through a particular location while coming under enemy fire. AI is pretty good…you won’t be rushing into a fire fight without quickly getting your ass handed to you if you play on hard. Add in the new exoskeleton and advanced abilities and you’ll quickly adapt to boost jumping, scaling buildings, cloaking and using a grapple hook to fly across areas undetected. The storyline is normally nothing to write home about, but this time around they’ve done a pretty believable job.
Lastability: it won’t take you long to complete the single player campaign, but the multiplayer is what will keep you coming back day after day. Great selection of maps to start with and as always you can download bonus maps. The maps range from close combat to wide open spaces with a greater vertical component to make use of your new abilities.
Final thoughts: the biggest major change in the franchise for ages, but they’ve done an excellent job of incorporating futuristic warfare without compromising what fans loved about the series. Fast paced action set in great locations with new abilities will keep fans happy. Gets a hoo-raa 9 out 10.
Right…now one of you is gonna walk away with a Xbox 360 copy of the game.
Tell me in the comments below why you want the game then head on over to Megarom games HERE and tell me which of the upcoming games you’d most like to get.
Will pick a winner early next week. Comp open to anyone in SA.
